Lee Stillwell

At the forefront of the American Medical Association’s national advocacy efforts for 18 years as chief lobbyist, Lee Stillwell served as Senior Vice President, The Advocacy Group, managing a staff of 120 located in Chicago and Washington, D.C., with a budget of more than $22 million and oversight of one of the nation’s premier political action committees. Stillwell also supervised the AMA’s health policy operation, spearheaded development of a unit to monitor the private health care marketplace, and directed staff coordination of relations with more than 100 medical specialty societies and all state and county medical societies. The team he built to lobby Congress, the White House, federal executive branch agencies and state legislatures, is considered among the most effective and powerful in the nation.

Stillwell is known for putting together detailed multi-faceted, integrated strategic plans to meet client needs. Coalition building is a specialty of his, and he has developed a reputation as an innovator of cutting-edge initiatives in political action and grassroots.

Stillwell also has an extensive media background, having served as a daily newspaper city editor and national newspaper correspondent. This experience resulted in the development of communications and media relations skills which he integrates into strategic plans. Stillwell developed and implemented a national media relations program for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) while serving as their chief communications executive in the nation’s capital.

During his more than three decades in Washington, D.C., Stillwell served two different stints as U.S. Senate staffer, first with Senator Abe Ribicoff (D-CT) and later with Senator Bill Armstrong (R-CO).

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, and graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Stillwell has been involved with a number of boards: American Tort Reform Association (ATRA), Board of Directors; American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), chairman, public policy committee, and chairman, government relations section council; United States Capitol Historical Society, Board of Trustees, vice president and executive committee member; National Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Capital Chapter, chair, Board of Directors; USO World Board of Governors, field operations committee chairman and chairman, search committee for new CEO and board chair. Stillwell also participates in many charitable and civic causes in Washington, D.C.
